When you create a zone edge, a barrier between the woods and your lawn, you have created the first defense in tick control. Let the sun shine in! Trim tree branches, clear brush, vines, weeds and leaf litter away from shady areas in the yard, away from walkways. Keep your grass and weeds cut as short as possible, and keep the borders well manicured.
Sheds, picnic tables, and children’s swing sets should be situated in the sun away from woods. You want to restrict organic ground cover and put down wood chips and gravel in shady areas. You want to keep your grass short. You want to have a zone edge about three feet wide that will prohibit the migration closer to your family and pets.
